Café Luso has been a Lisbon fado house since 1927, and has stood in Bairro Alto since 1941, in the old cellars of the Brito Freire Palace. These photographs show what words cannot reach: the stone vault, the murals, the fado singer at the moment of surrender, and the dishes that accompany the night.

Book an evening at Luso

Fado begins at 20:15. The kitchen opens at 19:00. The tables beneath the vault are few — and evenings fill up well in advance.
